Cats in the Cradle is the fourteenth episode of A Different World's fifth season which was first broadcast on January 16, 1992.
Ron bets on a big football game when he finds out the rival quarterback has the flu. When he overhears some fraternity boys from the other school put Hillman down, he places a bet with them too. Hillman wins and when Ron goes to collect his winnings, he mentions that if the other team wants to win maybe they should have had more "brothers" playing for them. A fight breaks out, Dwayne jumps in to help and everyone gets busted by campus security. In jail, tensions continue to mount as each person is allowed to tell their own version of the story. After hearing each version, it's hard to tell who really started the fight. When one of the fraternity boys makes a racial comment towards Whitley, it's clear someone has a problem with racial relations. One of the guys in the rival school, believing what they did was wrong, eventually confesses and turns his friends in. Creative sentencing by the judge puts everything in perspective. All parties involved are required to report for community service and must work together.
